Membership Information

Membership in the Academy

Education is a core value of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. In order to maximize the benefits of the Academy to the medical school’s educational mission, membership is inclusive with a tiered structure of membership, and explicit criteria defined for membership at each tier level. The duration of membership is limited to four years and is renewable based on performance criteria.

Eligible Faculty: Only faculty with a primary appointment in the Miller School of Medicine are eligible for membership in the Academy. However, exceptions may be made on an individual basis by the Academy Steering Committee. All members of the Academy must have a faculty appointment that is described in the UM Faculty Manual. This appointment may be fulltime, part-time, paid-voluntary, or voluntary.

Membership Tiers and Criteria: Academy members hold one of the following three ranks: Associate, Fellow, or Master. The specific details of the criteria for membership at each rank are defined by the Academy Steering Committee and can be modified by that body.

Associate: must document number of required direct teaching contact hours; must have evaluations demonstrating quality teaching;

Fellow: must document number of required direct teaching contact hours; must have evaluations demonstrating quality teaching; must have demonstrated institutional administrative or committee service in biomedical education; must demonstrate local and national contributions in biomedical education through scholarly work;

Master: must document number of required direct teaching contact hours; must have evaluations demonstrating quality teaching; must have demonstrated institutional administrative or committee service in biomedical education; must demonstrate national and international contributions in biomedical education through scholarly work;

The educational efforts and accomplishments of faculty that are considered in the application for membership must be in the following areas:

  1. UME (medical students)
  2. GME (residents and fellows)
  3. GRAD (MS, MPH, PhD, DPT students etc.)
  4. CME (practicing physicians)

Educational efforts in Baccalaureate (undergraduate studies) are only considered if the faculty member also teaches in one of the four areas listed above. Faculty seniority should not be directly considered and the entire career body of work can be included in membership decisions.
